Grand Theft Auto IV Vehicles

There's a reason it isn't called Grand Theft Public Transport.
Header Image

GTA protagonists are a lazy bunch - the occasional action their feet ever see while going about their daily business will either be between the driver's side doors of stolen automobiles, or short side-to-side maneouveres as they hose the gang population of a small inner-city suburb with machine-gun fire. The ever-generous supply of road hogs and grocery getters have formed the diverse bedrock that is GTA's cars, bikes, trains and aircraft. Here we have a lightly-toasted record of the various means of transport we have seen in the official screenshots and trailers, but bare in mind there will be plenty more in the final game - we just haven't seen enough of it yet...

STALLION

Details:
· 2-door
· Muscle

First making a prominent appearance in the second trailer, the Stallion has appeared in every game in the series since GTA III. This new version appears to have been completely redesigned; its former shape as a convertible 2-door saloon has been replaced with a muscle-coupe look similar to that of the Sabre in previous games, along with the word Stallion emblasoned on the rear.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Banshee, Infernus, Turismo

Details:
· 2-door
· Sports

This is the only clear image we have of this convertible sports/super car, shown sitting by Niko in the third trailer. The rear light design looks similar to that of a recent Aston Martin - a possible inspiration for this car's designer. We can expect to see a selection of speedier cars available throughout Liberty City, in tradition with GTAs of the past.

IMAGE

ALBANY

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

One of the first cars to appear in any media, this black saloon is thought to perhaps be a minicab beloning to Roman, Niko's cousin. In its appearance in the third trailer it is shown leaving the building rumoured to be Roman's taxi rank with both Niko and Roman himself inside. A minicab/taxi licence number sticker can clearly be seen printed on the rear.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Sentinel, Bravura

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

This car is most reminiscent of a BMW, accurately portrayed in previous GTAs by the Sentinel. As it drives over a length of plywood lying in the road in the third scene of the first trailer, the viewer is reminded of the physics engine incorporated in GTA IV. The suspension's immediate response to this obstacle promises another realm of vehicle handling that should make for some very interesting back-alley cop chases.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Sentinel, Admiral

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

Another from the first batch of screenshots, this car shares design traits with a Lexus or a BMW. The perfect luxury ride for a mob boss or corrupt politician.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Stinger

Details:
· 2-door
· Sports Convertible

The very first car shown in the first trailer, there has been much speculation regarding this car's design. Some call it a Mercedes Benz cabriolet replica, others a Volkswagen Eos. Whichever it is, as the character driving it adjusts his mirror, this scene first gave us a look into the new range of animatated quirks typical of the inhabitants of Liberty City.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Landstalker, Huntley

Details:
· 4-door
· SUV

Dotted around the various trailers, this SUV seems to be the token gas-guzzler of inner city New York. The front appears to be a blend of the new Land Rover Discovery and a Cadillac Escalade, this soccer mom's dream should make for some satisfying mess-making on and off road.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Kuruma

Details:
· Hatchback

This small city-runner looks very similar in style to a Toyota Prius or Chevrolet Cobalt. Perhaps we have a hybrid-fuelled GTA joke to be made here, but I'm sure we can expect to see plenty such cars in the richer, smugger areas of Liberty.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Tampa, Savanna

Details:
· 2-door
· Tampa, Savanna

Older pre-90s cars, as pictured here in Broker, have been commonplace in poorer areas in previous GTAs. Broker is modelled off of Brooklyn, the notorious district of NYC with many gang ties, so we can expect to see many of these classic bangers riddled with bullet wounds loitering in the dark streets of Broker's ghettos.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

This car's design is clearly inspired by the Chrysler 300C, first proving to many fans that GTA IV would be set in present day (the 300C began production in 2004). This image shows off the new damage technology used on the cars - a vast improvement compared to previous GTA games.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Bobcat, Yosemite

Details:
· 2-door
· Pickup

Though GTA IV's Liberty City is reported to be lacking in rural areas, this doesn't appear to affect the population's love of their 4x4s. Plenty are shown throughout the trailers, this particular one appearing a couple of times. Similar in design to Jeep Cherokee and an old GMC pickup truck, time will only tell if Niko and his comrades can make use of the pickup's rear.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Willard

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

This shot is taken of a saloon containing two assailants as they chase Niko and Roman in their black sedan pictured earlier during the third trailer. It's lines are similar to those of a 90s Ford Escort, and again are likely to be the cheaper and less-conspicuous option favoured by gang members in the more cultured areas of Liberty City.

IMAGE

COMET

Details:
· 2-door
· Coupe

Previous carnations of the Comet borrowed a lot in design from 80s Porsches, but the new model pictured has had an update. Similar to a new Porsche, perhaps with a little BMW Z4 thrown in there too, this looks like a great nippy set of wheels for those back alleys.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Clover

Details:
· 2-door
· Coupe

The Sabre first appeared in Vice City, and was known for its grunting engine and nippy handling. This particular car looks like the perfect getaway ride for the aspiring mobster, as well as ideal for some fun on those long highway straights.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

No other car in the GTA series has borrowed so heavily in design from the Mitsubishi Galant, so it's hard to make a prediction on just what name this car will be given. The Galant is a practical, powerful japanese car that should prove ideal for jostling with police cruisers out on the open road.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Solair, Stratum

Details:
· 4-door
· Station wagon

Both the Solair and Stratum were entirely new cars for San Andreas - filling the space of 90s American station wagon. This car looks like a Saab or Audi crossover SUV, perhaps combining speed and offroad ability. However in keeping with Rockstar's cynical tendencies, we're likely to see this and other offroaders spending most of their time pootling around the inner city areas.

IMAGE

BLISTA

Details:
· 4-door
· Station wagon

Though looking similar to the smaller station wagon previously shown, the size in comparison to this Comet rushing by it in the screenshot suggests it to be the familiar Blista people carrier, that has appeared in a similar form since GTA3. Surprisingly maneouverable for a front wheel drive minivan, the Blista plays a key part in keeping the range of cars to choose from a diverse one.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Remington

Details:
· 2-door
· Coupe

The Remington made the occasional appearance on the streets of San Andreas, but was generally confined to lowrider meets and rare sightings in San Fierro. Sleek as a fox, sharp as a train and with the strength of a bull, corners are something this monster isn't designed for.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Voodoo

Details:
· 2-door
· Sedan

The Voodoo appeared in Vice City as the Haitian gang's favoured lowriding yanktank, fully equipped with hydraulic suspension. It reappeared again in the ghetto suburbs of Los Santos, and will no doubt make another visit in the grittier areas of Liberty City.

IMAGE

SABRE TURBO

Details:
· 2-door
· Muscle Coupe

The Sabre Turbo first appeared as the roaring muscle coupe of 80's Miami in Vice City. This gem of a getaway car shouldn't fail to disappoint for those lengthy police chases. Grab your shades.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Details:
· 4-door
· Saloon

This dark saloon seems to have borrowed heavily from the design of the Lexus IS, also branded as the Toyota Altezza.

IMAGE

DILLETTANTE

Details:
· 4-door
· Hybrid

Featuring on its own page on Rockstar's GTA IV website, this electro-powered Toyota Prius replica will represent classic Grand Theft Auto humour at its finest.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Taxi

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

Taxi cabs are an integral part of bustling metropolises, and they are no stranger to GTA. Since the first GTAs the classic yellow Taxi has been available throughout the map, ready to be stolen or destroyed at a moment's notice. More recent GTAs have evidently looked to the NYC Ford Crown Victoria cab for design inspiration, and the cab pictured here on the far left looks to be no exception. In addition there will be a variety of cab makes, as is the case in NYC. Speculation tells us that Roman, Niko's brother, owns a cab service in 'Broker' - so perhaps we will see Niko get behind the wheel and meter to earn his first few bucks in the US?

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Details:
· Superbike

The NRG900RR makes its first appearance in the third trailer, as Niko pulls an enormous wheelie as he speeds off. We first saw the NRG500 in San Andreas; those who knew it well will know it was the fastest and most manouverable vehicle, let alone motorbike, in the entire game. We'll let you decide what that may mean for this updated model.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Faggio

Details:
· Moped

Anyone who has played previous GTAs will be familiar with the intensely irritating whine of the Faggio scooter and its pizza-delivering variant. Based on the famous Vespa scooter; named after the Italian for 'wasp', another noisy little contraption that is just as uncomfortable to sit on.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
BF800

Details:
· Superbike

Another superbike roared onto our screens in the third trailer - lacking in body panelling it is particularly reminiscent of the BF400 of San Andreas. Refer to the NRG900RR for an explanation of our educated guess at a possible name for this roadhog...

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Freeway

Details:
· Heavyweight bike

The Freeway has appeared since motorcycles were first introduced in Vice City, and has long been a favourite for long drags and travelling with style. Used by the Vice City Bikers in a modified form known as the 'Angel', we may see the return of a Hells Angels inspired troop to roam the streets of Liberty City.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Predator

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

The Predator was also a part of GTA III's Liberty City, featuring two rather ineffective mounted guns that were hard to aim, but caused great damage - much more annoying when you're on the receiving end. Hopefully these new police boats will offer a little more in the way of firepower, as well as perhaps a few other improvements that will apply to seacraft as a whole, such as extra passengers.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Police

Details:
· 4-door
· Sedan

Grand Theft Auto cannot exist without its various forms of law enforcement, and no such vehicle is more familiar to us than the police patrol cruiser. Whether they're hot on our tails; pulling out in front of us, or flying over the top of us at a bizarre angle, the cops and their endless government funding are the ultimate object of destruction. This new rendition now features the NYPD blue and white that was swapped with black and white for GTA III's Liberty.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Firetruck

Details:
· Big
· Red

The Firetruck has been a favourite for many a fan for years - its tuned engine designed for quick response times makes for some very high speed driving, and its added weight means fellow road users don't stand a chance.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Mule, Yankee

Details:
· 2-door
· Truck

The industrial areas of Liberty City and large docksides and harbours won't be without their selection of heavy goods vehicles, but this large box-bodied truck, shown here crossing a bridge, suggests the freeways won't be without their share of unstoppable heavy carnage.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Linerunner, Roadtrain

Details:
· 2-door
· Tractor

The Linerunner has featured in every GTA since GTA III so far, and has remained one of the favourites for clearing a road quickly and efficiently. It's likely trailers will be incorporated that can be attached to tractors like this, as was done in San Andreas. We can look forward to sliding one of these sideways and causing freeway carnage.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Rumpo, Pony

Details:
· 2-door
· Van

This inspired Ford Econoline replica will certainly see plenty of use by industrial workers... and the occasional drug smuggling cartel.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Mule, Yankee

Details:
· 2-door
· Truck

This goods truck borrows much of its design from the Isuzu NRQ. Its large alloy box-body looks ideal for transporting all kinds of contraband, but we'll have to wait and see whether the developers let Niko fill it with hot goods.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Securicar

Details:
· 2-door
· Truck

The Gruppe Sechs security van makes yet another appearance - it's been a favourite since its first appearance in GTA3. With the new features available to us this hopefully won't just be a case of pulling the driver out and delivering the truck to a garage. This screenshot suggests we might be able to steal the contents and make off with it by our own means.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Trashmaster

Details:
· Refuse collection

The Trashmaster has featured in every GTA game after and including GTA2 - it has become an icon of the series' vehicles, despite it's uselessness as anything other than a roadblock. Perhaps we may see better use of its crusher this time around - portable evidence disposal, anyone?

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Maverick

Details:
· Helicopter

The good old Maverick of Vice City and San Andreas seems to make a return here, showing off the possible new ability for characters to 'hang' onto moving vehicles.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Raindancer

Details:
· Helicopter

This replica Sikorsky S-70 (aka Raindancer in previous games) has appeared in official screenshots and trailers alike. It's hard to tell just what the decals on the side are, but the blue, white and green as well as the logos are reminiscent of the US Department of Homeland Security. It certainly looks to be the bigbird of choice for law enforcement.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Marquis

Details:
· Sailing boat

A new version of the Marquis sailing boat from the shores of Vice City and San Andreas seems to be making a reappearance.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Squalo

Details:
· Speedboat

The Squalo of Vice City was a Miami Vice influenced speedboat, namely the 1983 Chris Craft Stinger 390. No 3D GTA has so far failed to provide a white-knuckle speedboat, and it seems GTA IV is no exception to that rule.

IMAGE

UNKNOWN

Possible name(s):
Dinghy

Details:
· Motorboat

This boat first appeared in the third trailer, and isn't particularly similar to any boat seen in a previous GTA except those belonging to the Police and Coast Guard. It's dark colour may suggest popularity among those that don't wish to be seen.

IMAGE

GTA III fans will remember well the elevated railway system that stretched around Portland, and will be pleased to see it making a return in GTA IV's updated Liberty City. This new train model is still very similar in style to the original version - its squalid atmosphere remains strong.
